Feeling nervous at the easing of lockdown?
Now we have a potential date for lockdown easing in England, there is a mix of reactions. I’ve had a lot of conversations this week about the “right” way to feel. People who are less than excited have told me they are worried that their reaction is somehow wrong.
It can seem like there’s a right way to feel but there isn’t. Not only is this a totally new situation we’re all in but we’ve all had very different experiences of lockdown. Some people have benefited from the pace of life slowing down whilst for others it’s highlighted things going on for them. Without our usual distractions, time with our thoughts have intensified. With this in mind, it makes sense that people can feel a wide range of emotions about the same thing.
If you’re feeling nervous about socialising again or maybe you’re worried about your health. I want to let you know that how you’re feeling isn’t wrong.
My clients and I have come up with some strategies:
Step by Step
I know it’s easier said than done. Our minds can jump to the future and the past in less than a second. The main aim of our unconscious mind is to protect us. However, dwelling on the worst case scenario only puts us in a state of panic, it rarely helps us. Focussing on the here and now - which is the only time that exists right now - can be calming. Here are some ways to focus on the present

Judgements
The idea that we have to be positive all the time can be damaging. Allowing all feelings without judging ourselves allows them to pass. If we are worried, instead of dismissing it and trying to push the worry away, acknowledge how you’re feeling. It might be useful to tell yourself something along the lines:
“Even though it feels scary, I know this thought is trying to protect me. I’m just going to take things one day at a time.
Take the pressure off
Go at your pace. We’ve all learned that things can change quickly. Give yourself some patience to find your way with this new situation. You might feel differently tomorrow or in a few weeks.
