How good are your stress coping skills?

Imagine there’s a bucket that you carry around which slowly fills up every time you experience stress.

How heavy is your bucket? What helps you to feel strong enough to carry it? What lightens the load?

We often berate ourselves when stress overwhelms us - as if it’s some kind of failure. If stress builds up without us ‘emptying the bucket’ effectively then the consequences are clear - in our mood, our health, work or all of those areas. Have a look at the image below. It’s a simple idea that can help us to think practically about stress management.

Some questions to have a think about:

What level is your stress bucket - relaxed, average or higher?

What are the main causes of stress?

What reduces the stress? Don’t just wait for a holiday! Healthy happy people have something regular that reduces stress levels. Due to Covid, we may have missed some of our usual ways to relax and feel healthy which will have had an impact.

Are your coping skills actually relaxing or are you just zoning out? People spend time half asleep in front of Netflix or scrolling on their phone - these are distractions and not effective ways to relax.
